Opening Ceremony Held for Tohoku Sumiden Precision

Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., held an opening ceremony for its subsidiary, Tohoku Sumiden Precision Co., Ltd., which aims to be a major production base for cemented carbide drills and steel tools, on December 19,

Amid the growing economic development and automobile production in emerging markets, the demand for cutting tools, particularly for cemented carbide drills and steel tools, is expanding on a global scale. To enhance the supply capacity of these products, the Sumitomo Electric Group established Tohoku Sumiden Precision in April 2016 and it assumed the production of cemented carbide drills and steel tools, which were previously produced by Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal and Tokai Sumiden Precision, respectively. Tohoku Sumiden Precision started full-scale production on November 2017.

Tohoku Sumiden Precision has the region’s first drill grinding facility. On the premises, Tool Engineering Center, the sixth such facility in Japan, has also been established and commenced operations on December 2017 to enhance customer services in the region by providing individual technical consultations, demonstrations of machining work using the latest tools and equipment, and various workshops.

The ceremony was attended by over 50 people including the governor of Fukushima Prefecture, Masao Uchibori, the mayor of Miharu Town, Yoshinori Suzuki, together with our customers and partners in the Tohoku region and Sumitomo Electric Group officials.

Katsuyuki Tanaka, President of Tohoku Sumiden Precision, made the remarks that, based on our slogan “Working Together in Pursuit of Development to Become a Globally Active Company from Miharu,” we will strive to provide our customers around the world with excellent products in a short delivery time at reasonable prices, by creating a company that respects its employees and maximizes their competence. We will ensure that the Tohoku Tool Engineering Center closely cooperates with customers to satisfy their needs through its workshops and various services including test cutting.

Masayoshi Matsumoto, Chairman of Sumitomo Electric, remarked that Sumitomo Electric supports Tohoku Sumiden Precision to become a company that keeps growing together with local people.

Tohoku Sumiden Precision will strive to provide high-quality cemented carbide drills and steel tools in a short delivery time. From Fukushima Prefecture, the company will provide products and services that satisfy our customers all over the world.
